Other Types of Waste

Other waste

In addition to the standard items collected from your doorstep, there are many other types of waste that must be sorted and disposed of correctly.

WARNING: It is strictly forbidden

To place the following items in street bins or to leave them on the ground (fly-tipping) near collection points:

  • Industrial waste
  • Hazardous or toxic waste
  • Asbestos (Eternit)
  • Boats, motor vehicles (or parts of them), and combustion engines
  • Gas canisters and pressurized containers (fire extinguishers, etc.)

Please also keep in mind:

  • Waste not classified as “urban waste” by local regulations must be handled through specialized channels. For these items, you must contact private specialist companies on or off the island.
  • Many of these items are highly toxic or polluting. It is vital to ensure they are disposed of properly at the end of their lifespan to protect our environment.
  • Illegal dumping is a crime and is punishable by law.
  • Asbestos

ESA has launched a support service for private citizens with a registered TARI (Waste Tax) account to help with the safe removal of asbestos.

We work with specialized contractors to keep safety and disposal costs fair and regulated. ESA acts as a facilitator, guiding residents through the administrative paperwork and safety procedures required for removal.

If you need to dispose of Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM), call our toll-free number 800 688 850 or email info@esaspa.it to book a technical inspection.

This service is only for private individuals (both residents and second-home owners) who pay the TARI tax. It is not available to businesses or contractors.

  • Used Batteries

Batteries must be collected separately so heavy metals can be safely recovered and reused in industrial cycles rather than polluting the soil.

You can request a special “Urban Battery” container from ESA for your home. This container has a safety lid to prevent leaks. Once full, take it to your local Recycling Centre (Centro di Raccolta) for free disposal.

You can also drop off used batteries at participating retailers (e.g., tobacconists) or in the dedicated battery bins located around town.

  • Expired Medicine

Take expired medicines to your local Recycling Centre, pharmacy, or doctor’s office. Please use the designated bins to ensure they don’t harm public health or the environment.

Top Tip: Remove the paper box and the instruction leaflet and recycle them with “Paper.” Only the medicine itself (and its immediate blister pack/bottle) goes into the pharmacy bin.

Empty glass medicine bottles should go in the glass recycling bins. However, if the bottle still contains liquid medicine, keep it inside and dispose of the whole thing in the pharmacy bin.

WARNING: Expired medicines contain chemicals. NEVER throw them in the general waste bag.

  • Toner & Ink Cartridges

Home printer cartridges and toners should be taken to your local Recycling Centre.

This does not apply to commercial printing businesses.

It is strictly forbidden to dump these in nature, near street bins, or in your general waste bag.

  • Metal

You can take iron or aluminum items (pots, tools, window frames, bed frames, etc.) to the Recycling Centre or book a home pickup for larger items.

WARNING: Never put metal scraps (rods, sheets, engine parts) in street bins. They cause serious damage to our sorting machinery, leading to high repair costs that affect the entire community.

  • Old Tires

Tires from private vehicles are considered urban waste. You can take one or two tires to your local Recycling Centre.

Tires from garages, mechanics, or tire shops are not accepted.

  • Used Cooking Oil

Cooking oil (from frying or food tins) is urban waste. Do not pour it down the drain! Use a sealed container (or request a free “Olimax” bin from ESA) and take it to the Recycling Centre.

  • W.E.E.E. (Electronic Waste)

You can take the following to the Recycling Centre or book a home pickup for:

    • Large “White Goods”: Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.
    • Screens: TVs (old and new), computer monitors, etc.
    • IT Equipment: Computers, laptops, mice, keyboards, mobile phones, chargers, etc.
    • Small Appliances: Irons, hair dryers, blenders, electric razors, etc.
  • Inert Waste (Rubble & DIY Debris)

Small amounts of rubble from minor DIY projects (e.g., a few tiles, one or two bathroom fixtures like a sink or toilet) are accepted at the Recycling Centre.

WARNING: Waste from professional renovations or construction companies is not accepted. Professionals must handle their own disposal.

It is strictly forbidden to dump rubble in nature, near street bins, or in your recycling/waste bags.
