What We Do

ESA S.p.A. manages the collection, delivery, and treatment of household and commercial waste for the municipalities across Elba Island.
High-quality service is key to keeping our island competitive. In an island setting, protecting the environment and striving for self-sufficiency are vital for the whole community’s needs.

Our waste and sanitation services are divided into two main categories:

• “Core Services”: The essential basics, including door-to-door collection, street sweeping, and the management of recycling centers.
• “Additional Services”: Extra tasks requested by local councils, such as clearing illegal dumping, spot-cleaning, and maintaining main roadsides.

ESA provides waste collection services for the towns of Portoferraio, Capoliveri, Rio, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Campo nell’Elba, and Porto Azzurro.

For door-to-door collection, pickup schedules are adjusted seasonally and are different for residents and businesses.

For businesses, we have specific zone-based calendars designed to meet the unique needs of commercial activities in each town.

For residents, a single year-round calendar is now in place. This “Elba System” ensures a consistent approach to waste management across all towns, especially during the busy summer season.

Street sweeping (both manual and mechanical) happens daily and is ramped up during the summer, tailored to local geography and population density.

Manual sweeping includes emptying street bins, cleaning weekly market areas, clearing storm drains, and, during summer, cleaning and leveling accessible beaches with specialized machinery.

Since 2021, we have introduced new street-washing equipment. This service has been highly praised and is now a key part of our regular cleaning projects.

ESA manages municipal Recycling Centers—secure areas where residents and businesses (registered for the TARI waste tax) can drop off sorted waste for recovery or proper disposal.
