Door-to-door (or kerbside) collection helps everyone take responsibility for their waste and sort it correctly. In areas where this service is active, ESA provides residents with the necessary bins and bags free of charge. This includes containers for organic waste, paper/cardboard, light packaging, glass, and general waste.
With door-to-door collection:
Households receive 4 types of bags and 4 color-coded bins. Businesses (non-residential) are provided with larger, lockable bins tailored to commercial needs.
You can visit the dedicated “Residents” or “Businesses” pages on our website, email us at portaaporta@esaspa.it, or call our toll-free number 800 688 850.
Yes. They just need to show a photocopy or a photo of the Health Card (Tessera Sanitaria) of the person registered for the waste tax (TARI).
Residents can go to any distribution point (listed on our website) with:
Businesses should email portaaporta@esaspa.it to request a replacement or a new bin.
For buildings with more than 10 units, we can usually provide lockable shared bins for your private courtyard. Your building manager (Amministratore) must request an on-site inspection by emailing portaaporta@esaspa.it.
You can use your own bags as long as they are semi-transparent, so our crew can check that items are sorted correctly. Black bags are strictly forbidden. For privacy-sensitive items, you may use a small “opaque” bag inside your general waste bag.
For organic waste, you must use biodegradable and compostable bags. For paper, you can use small cardboard boxes instead of bags.
Place your sealed bags inside the provided bins at street level, directly in front of your house number on public ground. Ensure they are easy for our trucks to reach and do not block sidewalks or traffic.
Check your specific calendar for the correct days and times. You can find it on our website (residents/businesses) or the PortAPPorta ESA App. If you put your waste out late, it won’t be collected; you’ll have to wait until the next scheduled day for that material.
Simply wait for the next scheduled day for that item. Alternatively, you can use one of the controlled-access “Eco-Islands” (drop-off points) located across Elba Island.
If our crew finds the wrong items in your bin, they will leave a “NON-COMPLIANT WASTE” sticker explaining why (e.g., wrong sorting, wrong day, or item must go to the Recycling Centre).
You must then fix the error and put the bag out on the next correct day. For example: if you put food in the plastic bag, remove it, put it in the organic bag, and wait for the right collection day.
Always make sure bags are tightly sealed and placed inside the bins (where required) to keep our streets tidy. Please flatten cardboard boxes and plastic bottles to save space!
These centres accept items that aren’t picked up kerbside (e.g., bulky furniture, garden waste, appliances). You can find your nearest centre on our “Recycling Centres” map online.
These drop-off points accept all 5 main types of household waste. Check our website for locations.
You will find a sticker explaining the mistake. Generally, the waste will be left behind, and you will need to put it out correctly on the next scheduled day.
You can report a missed collection by emailing portaaporta@esaspa.it, using the PortAPPorta ESA App, or calling 800 688 850 (Mon–Sat, 8 AM – 1 PM).
Bins are provided on a free-loan basis. Users are responsible for keeping them clean and in good condition.
No need to scrub them with soap, but please make sure they are empty and free of food residue.
Our bins come with a special “stray-proof” locking handle that prevents animals from opening them.
You can arrange the bins however works best for your space. This system is designed to make us more aware of how much waste we produce—our best tip is to try and reduce waste at the source!
If you’re unsure, check the “Rifiutario” (Waste Dictionary) on our website or use the PortAPPorta ESA App to look up specific items.
Garden waste (grass and prunings) should ideally be taken to your local Recycling Centre. If you can’t transport it yourself, you can book a free home pickup via email (portaaporta@esaspa.it), the online form, or by calling 800 688 850.
Yes, we usually collect on holidays too. In rare cases, times might change; we will post updates on our social media (Facebook, Instagram) and the “News” section of www.esaspa.it.
Italian national regulations only cover “packaging” for plastic recycling. This is because manufacturers pay a specific fee (CONAI) to recycle those items. This means items like plastic toys or kitchen utensils cannot go in the recycling bag, even if they are made of plastic. Check our “Waste Dictionary” if you’re unsure!
All packaging made of plastic, steel, or aluminum. Examples: bottles, tubs, yogurt pots, Styrofoam trays, and plastic cups/plates. Non-packaging items like kitchen utensils, plastic cutlery, basins, toys, stationery, and syringes do not belong here.
No, put glass loose into the green bin. No need to remove labels, but please take the caps off! Watch out for “glass-lookalikes”: Pyrex, crystal, ceramics, and mirrors belong in the general waste.
Never pour oil down the sink—it’s highly polluting. Collect it in a sealed bottle and bring it to a Recycling Centre. You can request a free “OilMAX” container from us using the form.
These are hazardous waste. Do not put them in the general trash. Take them to a Recycling Centre or to participating shops/pharmacies that have collection boxes.
Electronics (phones, tablets, blenders, etc.) and lightbulbs must never go in the trash. They must be taken to a Recycling Centre for safe recovery.
